The final report of 5th local Conama is presented in Vitoria-Gasteiz
Restoration of buildings, energy savings, using buses… These are some of the anti-crisis prescriptions to advance sustainability in cities contemplated in the final report of the 5th local Conama in Vitoria-Gasteiz, the European Green Capital 2012.
This publication lays out the highlights of the conference on sustainable cities held from 29 November to 1 December 2011 in Vitoria-Gasteiz, a meeting with 150 speakers where 81 technical reports were presented and which more than 700 people attended.
Throughout 128 pages, the book offers a selection of contributions by renowned experts and conference participants, with special emphasis on how to reformulate cities to make them more sustainable and habitable in a severe context of economic crisis such as today's. The areas covered are energy and climate change; sustainable mobility; greener cities; production, health and consumption. In addition, experiences of other cities are included, for example those of the three European green capitals that were represented at the meeting: Hamburg, Nantes and Vitoria-Gasteiz.
This local Conama (a local-scale projection of the National Environment Conference) has been organised by the Conama Foundation and the City Council of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Despite the measures adopted to reduce the environmental impact of the meeting, this conference has caused the emission of 65.94 equivalent tonnes of CO2 –basically due to travel for the organisation, speakers and participants (88.87%)–, that have been compensated through CeroCO2 (www.ceroco2.org) with an Amazon conservation project in Madre de Dios (Peru).
